August 9th, 2008
Friends/Family - If you’ve been a victim of prejudice by your own family members or friends because of your tattoos or piercings, your story is needed for the book I am currently working on. Please email me at tattoo.guide@about.com with your personal experience and contact information. Please put “social discrimination” in the subject line.

Employers - If you’ve been discriminated against by an employer or during an interview with a potential employer, those stories are also needed. Please follow the same instructions above, but put “employer discrimination” in the subject line.

What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger

August 8th, 2008

I ran into Enrique in front of the Borders at Penn Plaza, a prime tattoo-spotting location, as regular readers of Tattoosday know.

He sported three tattoos, including this fresh replica of his wings from the Air Force, where he was an E3 Airman 1st Class:

Here’s a sample of what this tattoo is based upon:
This piece, along with the others, was inked by Sandy at Body Art in Manhattan. When the picture was taken, the ink was still drying, having been tattooed only a few days earlier.

Most interesting to me was the line of Hebrew on the back of Enrique’s bicep (seen at the beginning of the post)

מה שלא הורג מכשל

A nod to his father, who was in the Israel Defense Forces, the Hebrew translates to “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. Interesting, there’s a whole discussion of this phrase in Hebrew here.

Enrique’s third piece is still a work in progress, so is not pictured here, but the central element seems to be a traditional naval anchor in the middle of his left forearm.

Thanks to Enrique for taking the time to talk to me about his ink, and sharing it here on Tattoosday!

Frazetta!

August 6th, 2008

The Ink Nerd and the Cat Girl (but which is which?)

My friend Matthew and I just made a special trip out to the Frank Frazetta Museum in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. It was awesome. After a quick (65-mile) drive from Brooklyn, we arrived on the beautiful 75-acre Frazetta estate, paid our admission, and wandered the one large room, ogling and marveling at the amazing paintings on the walls. I’d seen most of them in print many times, but nothing compares to seeing them in person, actual size. The brush strokes and the physical dimension and texture of the paint on the canvas are lost in most reproductions; did I mention it was awesome?

Frank wasn’t around at the time, but his wife Ellie chatted us up for quite sometime, and regaled us with stories of Frank, his family, his art, and his business:

  • Frank taught himself to paint with his left hand after a stroke a couple of years ago (an impressive example is on display at the museum).
  • At one point, he wasn’t happy with one of his paintings used for a pulp novel, and his publisher arranged to credit it to his rival, Boris Vallejo, instead.
  • He used to regularly paint over his classic paintings, because he was never satisfied with the published versions—not paint them again, mind you, but paint ON TOP OF the original work!
  • The US Army asked Frank if they could use his ā€œDeath Dealerā€ character in the insignia of a division, but they thought the name wouldn’t go over very well, so they referred to him as ā€œThe Phantom Warrior.ā€

Frazetta’s Death Dealer, by Stacy Sharp

Although Frazetta is perhaps best known for his definitive vision of Conan the Barbarian, Death Dealer seems to be the character of Frazetta’s most often translated into skin art. Here’s a tattoo version of the painting, ā€œDeath Dealer IIā€œ, done by Stacy Sharp at Sharp Tattoo in Ronkonkoma, New York.

If you’re not familiar with Frazetta’s masterful, iconic art and illustrations, you’re missing out. Check out the Unofficial Frank Frazetta Gallery for relatively large images of many of Frazetta’s most famous works, including ā€œCat Girl,ā€ above. Then, visit the Official Frazetta Art Gallery to buy posters of your favorites!

And go visit the museum, already!

Tattoo Shop Gives Back; You Can Help, Too!

August 5th, 2008
It’s nice to be able to report about something positive, and this story really touched my heart when I saw it this morning. Several artists from Bambu Needlez tattoo shop in Mary Esther, Florida have collaborated with a local special needs school (Silver Sands) to volunteer their time and provide an art program for the students. The school hasn’t been able to afford supplies needed to provide their own art program and when Bambu Needlez called and offered their services, they happily accepted.

Volunteer artists from Bambu Needlez plan to visit the school at least once a month and have already been collecting supplies. This is where you come in - if you are able to donate, they need all the poster board, glue, paints, brushes, etc. that they can get their hands on. For more details, you can call the school at 850-833-3364 or Bambu Needlez Tattoo at 850-226-4091.

Tattoosday at the Mall, Part 1 - Kevin Wears His Son on his Sleeve

August 4th, 2008
This portrait of Kevin’s son, Kevin Jr. graces his inner left forearm.

I had the chance to chat with Kevin (and Kevin Jr.) as we all waited for the women in our lives do some serious shopping damage at the Limited Too store at the Roosevelt Field Mall on Long Island.

Kevin has about 10 tattoos in all and he had this piece inked about two years ago. Kevin Jr. acknowledged he liked that his portrait was on his dad’s arm. Kevin Sr. added, laughing, “Let’s see how he feels when he’s older!”

Kevin and I talked tattoos for ten or fifteen minutes while we waited for the shopping to end.

This portrait was inked by Tim at The Red Parlour in Woodside, Queens. Kevin has known Tim for many years and he has had all of his work done by him.

Thanks to Kevin for sharing his son’s portrait here on Tattoosday!

How Many Times Can a Tongue be Pierced at Once?

August 1st, 2008
At least five! Victor Rogers sent me this fantastic photo of his 5 tongue piercings done at Freaks in Kansas City, Missouri. I’ve seen three done at once before, but this is a first for me. Anyone got a photo to beat it? If you’ve got a picture (of yourself!) with more than 5 tongue rings at once, send it along to me at tattoo.guide@about.com with your name and piercer’s information. Let’s see if we can get a little competition going here!

Note: When sending a photo, please use this one from Victor as an example - clear image, good size and great detail. This image was actually sent to me much larger and I was able to crop and resize it, which was great.

A Year Ago Today, Tattoosday Was Born

July 31st, 2008
When, on July 31, 2007, I posted my first installment of the weekly Tattoosday feature on BillyBlog, I didn’t know what I had started.

Had you told me then that, a year later, Tattoosday would have spun off from BillyBlog, that it would have set a personal best in July ‘08 with over 13,000 hits, and that I would be posting daily, I would have been skeptical.

Nonetheless, that’s what has happened. And, although I expect a drop-off in visits as summer ends and shorts and tank tops give way to jeans and long-sleeve shirts, I am pleased with how Tattoosday has progressed.

I want to thank everyone who has visited and contributed to the success of Tattoosday. It’s still a little baby blog by blogosphere standards, and its stand-alone self (apart from BillyBlog) doesn’t celebrate a full year until September 8, 2008, which is BillyBlog’s 3rd anniversary.

The lingering question is this: will Tattoosday surpass BillyBlog in traffic by then? As of July 31, Tattoosday had just over 48,000 hits in a little less than 11 months, whereas BillyBlog is at 63,500 hits just a month and change shy of 3 years. Check back on September 8 to see what happens.

Inkily yours,

Bill
