Tattoo Words and Sayings

August 19th, 2008

Many people opt for words or sayings to accompany their tattoo image. But sometimes the tattoo words or sayings are the actual image themselves. Here are three examples of popular tattoo words and sayings:

1. “In memory of” tattoos.

Obviously this is used to commemorate a lost one, whether it be a relative, a friend, or even a pet. In memory of tattoos are excellent ink to get to forever remember someone and pay tribute to them.

Many times the words “in memory of” are accompanied with a tattoo design. Common designs include a heart or hearts. Though something more specific and personal that is relevant to the lost individual may be added as well.

2. “Love/Hate” tattoos.

This is a tattoo saying or wording you don’t see too often anymore, though every now and then you will see some fresh ink with the love/hate lettering. This is most commonly placed on the knuckles, and is usually a stand alone word or saying tattoo.

The love/hate tattoo can also be accompanied by an image, usually with a banner below the image reading “love hate”. I’ve seen all kinds of different designs accompanied with this popular tattoo saying.

3. Chinese lettering tattoo.

This is generally a stand alone tattoo as the lettering itself is usually the actual art and design. Though some wearers will choose to have small lettering accompany a tattoo design.

You can choose whatever saying or symbol you like with the Chinese lettering tattoo, simply by researching the meaning your after, then looking at the lettering representation to find out if it’s to your liking.

Save The World, Lose The Girl

August 18th, 2008

Since I getting my wrists tattooed yesterday, I’ve been staring at them with narcissistic intent. Even as I sat through the 9:40 showing of Pineapple Express, a movie groundbreaking in its mediocrity, I was more concerned with whether or not I needed to apply more ointment. I find it strangely ironic that a tattoo—long considered to be a symbol of courageous recklessness—must be watched and babied in order to look its best.

Forum Discussion: Excessive Bleeding During Tattoo

August 17th, 2008
“So I’m doing a portrait/memorial for my parents on my left arm. It is also a cover up of an arm band i got some 12 years ago. We’ve put in around 20 hours so far (plus another 5 or so with the original arm band). The sessions now are getting shorter and shorter as I am bleeding too much, and especially with the portraits my artist doesn’t want to be pushing the blood back in. Anyways, [I’m] looking for some suggestions on what to do here. [I’m] not drinking before the tattoo - no aspirins/blood thinners/drugs - I let the arm heal fully, and have been using a moisturizer - upon my artists advice, been eating jello - read that vitamin k is a natural way to coagulate the blood and green leafy veg like spinach are a good source. None of this is helping! Anyone have advice?” - ghettojoey

Kate’s Floral Arm Piece

August 16th, 2008

Kate had this tattoo inked about 8 years ago somewhere in New Jersey. She doesn’t recall the artist or the shop, but that is often quite common.

The piece, which is on her right bicep, was designed by a friend of hers who was a tattoo apprentice.

She likes this simple floral design because it reflects her philosophy. To Kate, flowers represent life. Even though they die, she notes, they come back to life when they blossom again. Such is a very affirming and positive outlook on the world.

Thanks to Kate for sharing her tattoo here on Tattoosday!

Should Pets Be Allowed in the Tattoo Shop?

August 13th, 2008
I love animals. The picture you see here is my big ball of fluff, Julius. We also have a cat, a hedgehog and a fish at home. So if anyone would be a supporter of having animals in the tattoo studio, it would be me. I know some shops have their four-legged or feathered friends greet their clients and many of them enjoy being welcomed by a wagging tail or a squawking hello. But is it really a good idea to have pets in the shop, or should they be left at home?

A Newborn Tattoo for a Newborn Daughter

August 12th, 2008

Although it was the shamrocked neck piece that first grabbed my attention, Vicki offered up the above piece on her right shoulder instead.

Vicki explained that this rose tattoo is in honor of her daughter, born just two months ago. The piece was inked only last month by Michelle at True Blue Tattoo in Queens.

As a fellow inked person with two tattoos honoring my two girls, I certainly can appreciate the piece that honors one’s kids.

Thanks to Vicki for sharing her fresh tattoo with us here on Tattoosday.

Welcome to the world, Olivia Rose!

How to Pick a Tattoo Design

August 11th, 2008

As you walk around in public, it seems like everywhere you look, there is someone with a tattoo. People place them on their arms, legs, the small of the back, their feet and ankles. There are a myriad of designs and colors available to choose from. Should I get a basic tribal tattoo, black and white, fantasy, heck they are even doing portraits now! But which design should I go with? This is the hardest part of getting a tattoo, most people struggle with it. They search the internet for hours trying to find ideas, and or stop into multiple shops and thumb through graphics for hours. To get a tattoo that’s right for you, it needs to be meaningful to you. It’s better to choose something that is meaningful and not just an arbitrary design.
