Dire Straits – On Every Street

January 11th, 2011

Dire Straits were a British rock band, formed by Mark Knopfler (vocals and lead guitar), his younger brother David Knopfler (rhythm guitar and vocals), John Illsley (bass guitar and vocals), and Pick Withers (drums and percussion), and managed by Ed Bicknell, active between 1977 and 1995. Although the band was formed in an era when punk rock was at the forefront, Dire Straits played a more conventional style, albeit with a stripped-down sound that appealed to audiences weary of the overproduced stadium rock of the 1970s. In their early days, Mark and David requested that pub owners turn down their sound so that patrons could converse while the band played, an indication of their unassuming demeanor. Despite this oddly self-effacing approach to rock and roll, Dire Straits soon became hugely successful, with their first album going multi-platinum globally. ________________________________________ There’s gotta be a record of you someplace You gotta be on somebody’s books The lowdown – a picture of your face Your injured looks The sacred and profane The pleasure and the pain Somewhere your fingerprints remain concrete And it’s your face I’m looking for on every street A ladykiller – regulation tattoo Silver spurs on his heels Says – what can I tell you, as I’m standing next to you She threw herself under my wheels Oh it’s a dangerous road And a hazardous load And the fireworks over liberty explode in the heat And it’s your face I’m looking for on every street A three-chord

possibly my all time favorite Dire Straits song…and that is no easy thing to determine…I always kind of thought that this was kind of like, “Part II” to Private Investigations….both songs start off slow, but then build up at the end, and the themes seem similar as well…..

Such an amazing album like this recieves mixed reviews from critics and sells poorly. Such awful artists like those who we hear nowadays on the radios, are critically aclaimed and sell millions and millions.
    WTF???

I remember, when I was a kid, like 5 or 6, listening this song with my parents in our family’s car. Good old days.

I’m from Newcastle, and was recently in California. I was on the bus, and a A yankee bus-goer overheard me talking, and inquired as to where I was from. Once I told him, the first thing he said was -“wow, one of the greatest guitarists in the world is from there”. Proof!! The power of music!!
