Sugar Skulls and the Day of the Dead (Pt. 2)

October 19th, 2009
Last week you read the first page of this two-part article about Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and the practice of creating sugar skulls as part of the celebration. The first page explained where the holiday came from, when it is celebrated and what the significance of the ofrenda is. The second part of this article explains how the sugar skull came to be used as part of the Dia de los Muertos celebration, and why its history should be important to all of us even if we’re not Mexican, Catholic, or even religious. Especially if you plan to wear a sugar skull tattoo, I think it’s appropriate to bear some of the weight of its past as well.
