June 30th, 2008

Orchid tattoos can be a great choice of tattoo for both females and males. Dependant on the orchid you get and the meaning you are after, this flower tattoo can be either end of the spectrum, highly masculine in nature or very feminine. A popular favourite flower for corsages and bouquets it is no wonder it is also finding popularity in the inked world. So what exactly can the orchid tattoo stand for?

Convention Calendar Updated

June 28th, 2008
Several new events have been added to the calendar for both this year and next. I’m always impressed when an event is so well organized that they know the dates and location over a year in advance. This calendar features everything from small events (like motorcycle rides and shows) to larger events like International tattoo conventions.

If you have an event that you feel would be of interest to this community, please be sure to submit it via the form at the bottom of the calendar page.

Tom’s Pearl Jam Stickman Tattoo

June 27th, 2008

So last night I caught Pearl Jam at Madison Square Garden and, of course, there were tattoos aplenty. But, as I mentioned yesterday, concert-goers generally seem a little more focused on the event at hand than the pursuit of blogfodder by a fellow concert-goer.

Luckily for me, Tom was sitting right behind me and I got him to show me his “Stickman” tattoo. This is one of the band’s oldest logos, and is a common piece to get inked by the biggest devotees of the group.

Tom had this inked in 1994 at Da Vinci Tattoo Studio in Wantagh, New York. He had yet to see his first Pearl Jam concert when he had this tattooed on his left ankle. Last night was his 14th show (it was my fifth).

Thanks to Tom for sharing his Stickman with us!

Maori Tattoo Designs - A Great Pick That Needs Quality Art

June 25th, 2008

Maori tattoo designs are not your traditional way of getting inked, but they are some of the most amazing pieces out there. They can be detailed and complicating tattoos that truly need the accommodating artwork that is necessary for it to come out perfect on your skin. That seems to be the dilemma, because the web is filled with so much generic art. There is an easy way to find the quality stuff, though, which I will share with you.

QOW: Sunblock

June 23rd, 2008
Question: “Are there any sunblocks that are to harsh or harmful to the pigment of color tattoos? I use a spray sunblock that has an SPF of 70 and the brand name is Aveeno.
Also, Are there any sunblocks that you would stay away from that could possibly hurt colors?” - Michael

Answer: Sunscreen/sunblock is extremely important for both your tattoos and the rest of your skin! Once your tattoo has healed - meaning that any scabs are gone and your body has grown a protective layer of skin over the ink - lotions, ointments, and sunscreens applied to the surface of the skin cannot harm the tattoo itself. Quite the opposite when it comes to sunscreen, because it is the only thing that can protect your tattoo from fading due to sun exposure.

The level of SPF required to effectively protect your skin and ink is still debatable, though. Vincent Iannelli, M.D. explains this: “Does a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 provide twice the protection as one that has an SPF of 15? No, a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 provides protection against 93% of UVB rays, while one with an SPF of 30 provides 97% protection…Many experts question whether using a sunscreen with an SPF above 30 provides much more protection, since you are already blocking 97% of UVB rays.”

That being said, if wearing an SPF 70 sunblock makes you feel safer, it certainly won’t do any harm. Aveeno is a great product and I would trust it to protect me and my family.

xGoboBeanx’s Fairy Tattoo

June 22nd, 2008
I met Jill outside of Penn Station last week and she had this interesting creature on her left calf. I guessed it was a fairy, and noted (to myself) that it looked like one of the creatures in Lady Cottington’s Pressed Fairy Book.

I later learned that this was no coincidence, as the illustrator of said book is Brian Froud, upon whose work this tattoo was based.

Jill identified it as a cat fairy, which is supposed to grant protection while one sleeps. She had this inked at a tattoo shop in the Corona section of Queens about 6 years ago. Jill doesn’t recall the name of the shop, nor the artist that inked this, one of her six tattoos.

Jill deserves a little cross promotion here, as she is a video blogger over at www.xgobobeanx.com. Some of her other tattoos, along with this one, make fleeting appearances in her video posts. Her YouTube channel is here.

Thanks to Jill for sharing her fairy here on Tattoosday!

Itchy, Red Tattoo? Tattoo Infection and You

June 21st, 2008

As with any type of body modification or anything involving needles there are some risks of infection. Luckily, with proper research and picking a clean shop the rate if tattoo infection is very minimal. No one wants to spend hundreds of dollars on an infection, let alone have a resulting tattoo that just doesn’t look right because it got infected, so what are the things you can do to minimize the risk of tattoo infection?
