My New Vertical Labret Piercing
May 30th, 2008
I’d been wanting a vertical labret piercing for a while and while attending Hell City, I decided that a new piercing would be a great souvenir, so I got it done there.
I absolutely love it and it was probably one of the least painful piercings I’ve ever gotten even though it had quite a lot of flesh to go through! My piercer - James Fern from Division Tattoo - was a sweetheart and a great piercer. Unfortunately, a couple of days ago I lost the ball on the bottom of my jewelry and was disappointed to discover that I had been pierced with an externally threaded barbell. Since most shops have switched to higher quality internally threaded jewelry, I had to go and have the entire barbell replaced rather than just the ball on the end.
BeeJay over at Artistic Skin Designs saved me from my emergency situation and I really learned the difference between external and internal threads that night - I felt every thread of that barbell rip through my skin as he removed it, and yet the internally threaded barbell slid right in and didn’t even need a push. Always insist on internally threaded barbell jewelry!
John’s Other Three Tattoos
May 29th, 2008 Last week, I posted the “after” version of a tattoo I spotted early last Fall. The host, John, e-mailed me the updated photos after I spotted him in at the grocery store.
He also sent me shots of his three other pieces, posted above and below.
Via e-mail, John gave me the run-down on the tattoos, all inked at Body Art Studios in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
“The tattoo with the knife through the heart is a memorial tattoo for my grandmother who passed away in 2000. I drew it and Peter [Cavorsi] tattooed it. It took me a few years to get it because I wanted to get the tattoo done on her birthday… October 13, but I wanted to wait for a Friday the 13th ’cause that was her lucky day.”
“As for ‘Cheech,’ it is another memorial tattoo for my Uncle Patty, my grandmother’s brother. That is why it is in red, so it looks like the blood dripping from the knife [that] wrote out his name. He got the name ‘Cheech’ in World War II. It was his nickname, which is weird, because we are Italian and ‘Cheech’ in Italian is a nickname for Frank. Both of the tattoos are on my left forearm…”.
The black and gray piece is a Chinese character [kanji] with … fire. The symbol means ‘art as a skill’ and the fire around it represents my passion for the art, as I am practicing to be a tattoo artist myself. It was…my first tattoo, inked by Peter in 2002/2003″.
“…Last is the one on my left calf, which in Chinese means “fear no evil”. I got that in 2002-2003, as well. It was tattooed in Body Art, but was done by someone who worked for Peter at the time. I think his name was Sig or Zig…”.
On a side note, the guy who worked for Peter did my first tattoo, and he went by the name of “Sickie”. I think we’re talking about the same guy.
Thanks again to John for coming through and sending me the photos and the back stories on his tattoos!
Editor’s note: John’s comments are 99% verbatim. I took a little editorial liberty with some punctuation and spelling, along with an occasional edit, for the sake of clarity.
Shooting Star Tattoo Design - Quality Designs At Your Fingertips
May 28th, 2008We are going to talk about the shooting star tattoo design and why it is so hard to find the high quality artwork for one online. I know, many of you have search high and low, but most people end up only seeing generic artwork that is not fit for anyone’s skin. Most of what you are most likely seeing is over a half a decade old. Well, here is what you must know about that kind of art, as well as how to locate the good stuff.
Titus l’hibiscus.
May 27th, 2008Alors voila, j’ai un hibiscus, surnommé Titus.
Hell City 6 Review and Photos
May 26th, 2008Ian Jones Has Thirteen Tattoos. Here Are Four.
May 25th, 2008I saw this hannya mask outside of Penn Station and went up to talk to its host, Ian Jones, a Long Islander waiting for a train.
Despite a light rainfall, we chatted for ten minutes or so about his tattoos and the stories behind them.
Since the advent of Tattoosday, participants’ reactions to the project range from total disinterestedness to moderate amusement. Ian, however, took it a notch higher, to the point of downright enthusiasm. He sounded sincere in his appreciation for the blog (and the idea behind it), and I got the impression that he would have let me take pictures of each tattoo, had time and weather permitted.
The big piece that first drew my attention was the colorful half-sleeve on his left bicep. The hanyya masks are traditional elements in Japanese tattooing styles, and he has two masks representing good and evil.
This tattoo, about ten hours worth of work so far, was done by Kristen at Artful Ink Tattoo Studio, in Bohemia, on Long Island. He noted that it was also a cover-up of a “bad sparrow and flower”.
Ian says he gets the most questions about his Volkswagen logo on the inside of his right wrist.
He explains why he got an automotive emblem on such a prominent spot: he’s always loved German engineering and has always had VW vehicles. His first car was a VW Eurovan, but his second car, a VW GTI 2-door hatchback, was what cemented his love of Volkswagens for life.
Ian told me how he was in his GTI when he was in a horrible crash. The other vehicle was purportedly going 100 MPH and Ian is convinced that the VW’s structural shell protected him from critical injuries.
As a tribute to the GTI, and as an expression of his love of Volkswagen, he had the VW logo inked on his shifting arm (he now drives a VW Jetta) as a reminder of his survival from such a harrowing experience.
His left arm sports two tattoos:
There is Long Island on the forearm and a star on his inner wrist. The star was inked the same time as the VW logo to provide balance, but it grew to take on a more important meaning. It’s a reminder symbol about a friend of his who is in the Marines.
The VW and star were inked by his friend and bandmate Tony Coffins at Resonance Tattoo, also on Long Island (Center Moriches). Ian and Tony are in a band, Phoenix Rise, together. See their MySpace page here and listen to them play.
The tattoo of Long Island, which Ian admits is not done that well (although I would say at least looks like Long Island), is nonetheless, still near and dear to his heart. Ian was adopted when he was a baby, and he feels that he could have ended up anywhere, and Long Island was his home. He is proud to be a Long Islander, and thus wears this as a badge of honor.
Thanks to Ian for his enthusiasm for Tattoosday, and let’s hope we see more of his ink here in the future!
Custom Temporary Airbrush Tattoos
May 24th, 2008
So you’re just not sure about the details of custom temporary airbrush tattoos, huh? Well there’s no shame in that. Getting a tattoo is a huge decision. You only get one chance to pick just the right design and just the right place to put it before you’re stuck with it for the rest of your life. You’d be stupid to rush into something like that. It would almost be like marrying someone on your first blind date; only divorcing a tattoo usually requires surgery and leaves a scar. Fortunately, you have the option to test drive a tattoo before you commit to it for life. Think of it as speed dating for your skin.
The custom temporary airbrush tattoos have been around for decades. You baby boomers probably have fond, childhood memories about Cockamamies, those fun little tattoos that used to come in Cracker Jacks and boxes of breakfast cereal. You just wet (usually by licking, right?) the back of the transfer paper to loosen the design and stick it to your skin and you’d have a tattoo for the day. You probably felt it made you look tough, like your dad and his service tattoo.
You say you’d be embarrassed to wear a fake tattoo? You’re friends will give you a hard time about not going for the real thing? Well consider that word, “real” for a minute. If your tattoo exists, then it’s real, right? It’s certainly not a figment of your imagination. Just think of it as a similar, but separate option.
Just like permanent body art, custom temporary airbrush tattoos have continued to evolve over the years, into a much more sophisticated product with many more options to choose from. The film industry helped push along the development of the product, because shooting movies that involved heavily tattooed characters, such as bikers, gangsters, or Ray Bradbury’s Illustrated Man, took so long to shoot. The makeup crew would invest a lot of time and effort into meticulously painting each and every detailed tattoo on the actor by hand, only to have their work quickly melt off under the intense heat of the stage lights.
Chemist, Dr. Samuel Zuckerman has an impressive list of accomplishments to his credit. He’s responsible for the Estee Lauder’s Origins line, the stripe in Aquafresh toothpaste and he’s the father of temporary body art. He invented the first skin friendly, authentic looking tattoo for the 1981 film by the same name. The film drew overnight attention to his invention and the amazement of the tattoo and makeup industries.
A few years later, Zuckerman and his son set about mass marketing the product. Today the Temptu company caters to the rich and famous as well as the average individual. They’ve added products like body glitter and stick on jewels, stencil-only stick-ons that let you fill in the color yourself, and even custom temporary airbrush tattoos, which are applied by applying a stencil to the skin and painting over it with a special spray paint. Tempu products have been used on some of the most famous fashion runways, as well as on the big screen in films like Xmen 2, Rent and The Mummy Returns. It’s also decorated the stars of HBO’s mega hit The Sopranos.
Prices are fairly reasonable, even for the most elaborate designs. There are varying levels of application graces required, depending on your choice of products. Surely just about anyone can easily apply the stick on tattoos, but if you choose the paint on kind, you may want to enlist the help of one of your more artistic friends.
You don’t have to feel like a fake for opting to go temporary with your body art. Just think of it as an extension of the rest of your cosmetic lineup. On your average night on the town, no one will know if your hair is colored, if your bra is padded, or if your tattoo is permanent unless you tell them. Just think about the custom temporary airbrush tattoos.
