Question of the Week – Degrees Needed to Become a Tattoo Artist?

April 11th, 2008
Question: My name is Melissa and I want to be a tattoo artist I was wondering if you could tell me what kind of degrees I can/need to get to be a tattoo artist.

Answer:Being a tattoo artist doesn’t necessarily require any degrees, but if you don’t happen to be one of the few who are truly gifted artists without any formal training, it certainly won’t hurt your prospects to take a fine arts course. You can also study color theory, perspective, lighting and shading and other components of art through books or smaller instructional classes. Trying different artistic genres will also give you a more rounded feel for the many different styles that tattoo clients look for – portraiture, graffiti, realism, 3-dimensional, Asian, graphic, etc.

Keep in mind, however, that no amount of formal artistic training will prepare you for how different it is to work on skin rather than canvas. Once you begin learning how to tattoo, it’s like starting all over again. But once you’re able to blend the two mediums together, that is when you will become a truly successful tattoo artist and not one that just colors inside the lines of pre-fab flash pictures.
